Illuminated in Sherman Oaks

This spectacular re-creation of a Barn Modern-style home lights up the Sherman Oaks night. While its singled Colonial feel was retained, the house was completely gutted down to the frame and updated with an inviting, brilliantly lit modern interior with a dramatic entry, and all-new Fleetwood doors and windows. The resulting 6-bedroom, 6-bath, 2-story, 9,000-square-foot masterpiece features a breathtaking backyard infinity, zero edge pool with arresting window.

No amenities were overlooked. There’s a full bar and elegant wine cellar. The upstairs balcony sports a retractable awning. Concrete decking feels solid underfoot. An outdoor gas fireplace in cast-in-place concrete warms the evenings.

A hill was replaced with retaining walls and compacted dirt, allowing for a concrete slab to be poured and the Jordan sport court put in place.

The back patio house proves to be a perfect place to host festivities, with a redone interior, warming fireplace and bathroom makeover.

“It was our first experience ever building a home. All of our friends who had been through this process overwhelmed us with horror stories of unscrupulous contractors, building delays and budget overruns. Nonetheless, we were determined to build our dream home.

“Doug and his team not only built our dream home, he did so on budget and on time. Just as importantly, Doug was easy to work with, always striving to make us happy and keeping our stress levels low. Inevitably, Doug becomes an extended member of the family, someone who cares deeply about his work and his clients’ satisfaction. Doug didn’t just build us a house – he built a warm and inviting home for our four children and us. We couldn’t be happier.

The Tuscan Villa in Sherman Oaks

A Tuscan Villa situated in the middle of Sherman Oaks, Douglas Raub Design and Development did all of the construction on this spacious property, including the enticing pool and outdoor environments. The outside enjoys stamped, multi-colored concrete, built-in seating around the fire pit, separate barbeque and bar areas, and a 42-by-18-foot rectangular pool that’s heated by solar energy. The 1,700 square-foot, two-story guesthouse sports a full kitchen, upstairs master bedroom, two bathrooms and a great room for viewing. Tuscan tile floors were laid, and elegant millwork brings an exceptional level of detail.

More than just a remodel, the main house’s interior was completely gutted. The single-story, 5,000-plus-square-foot home features unique, Italian travertine stone floors and a kitchen with beautifully stained wood cabinets, gorgeous granite and Walker Zanger high-end tile. A spacious master bath, plus five bedrooms and five baths, mark this home as a masterpiece.

All work was completed in a remarkable eight months.

Retaining Doug Raub as our General Contractor to build or home was simply the best decision we made, among the hundreds, or perhaps thousands of decisions we faced. Doug has a tremendous work ethic. He puts his clients and their interests first. He has a keen attention to detail and he is very helpful in the process of tending to all the minutiae we faced along the way. Doug lays out a realistic schedule at the beginning of the process and then he adheres to this schedule. Ironically, we (the homeowners) were often the ones responsible for slowing down the process with the many decisions we had to make. Doug surrounds himself with very competent and hard-working people. His supervisors are responsible, his subs are excellent. Doug told us when we started the job that “we’ll have fun building the house together.” We couldn’t believe that. We were dreading the process. Sure enough, it was fun…and the final product is spectacular! And we couldn’t have done it..in that amount of time, and for that amount of money, without Doug Raub. We will gladly shout his name from our rooftop. Doug has become a family friend and we wouldn’t think twice about having him build with us again anytime!

Doug Raub

President and General Contractor

A native of Philadelphia, Doug grew up playing hockey and rooting for his beloved Flyers. After a storied college hockey career at the University of Dayton, where he graduated with a marketing / communication degree, Doug came to Los Angeles to fulfill his dream of working for an NHL team and spent a year with the Kings organization. He loved Southern California so much he stayed, but realized he wanted to take a different career path. He answered an ad in the Wall Street Journal and began working for a pool and hot tub company during the industry boom of the 1970s.

In 1976, he started his own company called Rocky Mountain Tub Company. Soon his clients were asking him to do decking and other construction projects. With customers loving his work, the company evolved to general construction, and, in 1992, Douglas Raub Design and Development was established.

With three decades of construction experience, Doug loves creating customs homes from scratch, enjoying making the entire process from laying the foundation to completion expertly come together. Still an avid hockey player, Doug and his dog Deuce reside in Sherman Oaks, on a street where no fewer than six neighbors have had his firm construct their homes.
